Okay - so it just turned 12 o'clock here in Denver and I know I've technically missed writing for today - but I'm going to do it any way.
Last night my cousin Chris and I played at KJ's Coffee Bar which is right around the corner from his house on Franklin and 24th - we've played there a couple times before. It's small place but has a good neighborhood feel to it - and I was thankful a good group of neighbors showed up. I caught it on video and it's funny to watch because of all the little kids running around the place and going in and out of the front door.
Chris played bass - which was a very unique ukelele bass - small and compact but with the full sound of a bass - and his friend Grant came and sat in with us for the second set on mandolin. It was a good time - and I do look forward to playing there again - most likely next month on April 16th.
Tonight we played at a bar called the Rockaway Tavern, which is close to downtown and has a very punk rock feel to it. The jukebox has a whole ton of hardcore punk, plus some old school country, and some interesting mixed CDs - punk, post-punk, Steve Earle - some Toby Keith too (for those of you interested in Toby Keith), some Willie and Johnny Cash - over all an interesting mix. Grant came and played with us again and the set went pretty well - the people that were there seemed to like what we did and I was happy with that.
We hung out for a while with some people that had showed up to hear us- and then realized that it was later than we thought do to the time change.
And now - I need to get ready for bed so I can make the long haul to Austin tomorrow. I set my alarm for 6:30am. I'll be ready.

A day in Denver - Day 8
After a long drive from Flagstaff yesterday, I safely made it to Denver, Colorado. I arrived at my cousin's house just before midnight - and was very happy to get off the road and into a warm bed. The drive was actually quite nice. The scenery is amazing throughout the whole drive - from the San Francisco Peaks that look over Flagstaff, to the Painted Desert and where old Route 66 still winds through, to the red earth of New Mexico. I was in Santa Fe as the sun was setting and it lit up the pine trees and the mountains that had bits of snow here and there beautifully.
As night fell I cruised carefully up the road into Colorado - keeping my eyes open for highway patrol along the way. Overall it was a nice easy ride - a bit long though. I found that after 12 hours everything starts to go downhill a bit - usually the perfect time for a break. So I was glad to get to my destination right before that point.
This morning I was up early, since my cousin has 3 kids and also since I was going to be joining him with a group of people for the St. Patrick's Day parade through downtown Denver. We were going to be playing Irish tunes in the back of a decorated truck through the crowds of people along the parade route. Since I'm no stranger to Irish songs I felt fairly confident about playing along with everybody - 3 guitars, including me, a mandolin, and a fiddle. My biggest concern was that I didn't have enough green on, I felt, to be in a St. Patrick's Day parade (which I know was being held on March 12th and not the 17th, but I figured it was so everyone could celebrate on a weekend) but I was able to find some green garland to wrap around my guitar strap and that worked for me.
There were two trucks for us in the parade - for the section of the neighborhood and garden that my cousin lived in. When we made it down to the staging area the trucks were decked out and covered with flowers, ladybugs, garland and banners that wrapped around the trucks - some garden equipment was attached to the front of one of the trucks, and they were to be followed by some people pushing wheelbarrows. Down there we were surrounded by the craziness of the parade. It's truly hard to describe all of it, but I liked the float of St. Bernards, the Star Wars with the Hoth set-up, the giant Jameson bottle (where I think they were giving out small bottles or shots of the Irish Whiskey). We were followed by a group of kids on unicycles.
After about 2 hours of waiting we were able to go - and it was so much fun. We had 4 songs worked out and we played those over and over as we cruised down the streets, surrounded by crowds of people - mostly dressed in green. It was fun to see everyone celebrating and enjoying the music we were playing - although the others did most of the work - I just followed along as best as I could. I was glad that I had made to town in time to take part in all this craziness. By the time we reached the end it had gotten cold - the sun had peaked out a few times and made things warm, but then the clouds blew in and it got chilly. I was glad to get back to the house and inside finally.
After resting and dinner, I made my way to the gig at KJ's coffeehouse and wine bar right around the corner from the house. I had played there twice before as was glad that we were doing it again. It's not too big of a spot, so we set up as best as we could out of the way, and at 7pm it was go time. I took video of it all and my cousin Chris was recording the sound so hopefully we can get that pieced together then share it on the web. Since it's a neighborhood place, people bring their kids and hang out - and so there's a lot of running around, in and out the front door - which is right next to where you play. It makes it fun overall - but hard to concentrate on playing at times.
For the second set, and after most of the kids had gone away, the mandolin player from earlier in the day, Grant, sat in with us. It was cool and I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing how it sounded. I was happy with the night as a whole and look forward to playing there at KJ's again.
Now I think I'm ready for bed.

Flagstaff - Day 7
Starting my day up here in Flagstaff at the Downtown Diner - it's a good place for a cheap breakfast - full of locals - and not too bad. There's still patches of snow on the ground and the San Francisco Peaks in the background still have a good amount covered. Once again I'm up here because I played last night at the Flagstaff Brewing Co., which is one of my favorite bars. It's right across the street from the old train station - and so it's a great place to watch the trains go by. I really do enjoy it up here - the air is clean and clear - there's a small town feel to it, but it also has a wordly feel to it because of all the people passing through town due to the Grand Canyon being only an hour away.
The show last night went well - played from 10pm to 1am. Lots of blues for this gig and not too much original stuff - it's what happens sometimes for bar gigs when people aren't fully listening. I slip into the blues mode. I met some new people - one guy was from England and traveling around the southwest for two weeks. Another guy was from California and in town because he did a lecture at the university NAU. FBC has always been a good bar to meet people in.
Today I head to Denver - through Gallup and Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Colorado Springs. Tomorrow I get to take part in a St. Patrick's Day parade with my cousin Chris.

Back to AZ - Day 5
This is going to be another quick one. Lots of traveling in the past two days. I just made it to Tucson where it is beautiful. The mountains in the distance lit up brilliantly by the setting sun.
It was a good show at The Cinema Bar last night - then Tomorrow up in Flagstaff at the Flagstaff Brewing Company.

Early Morning - Day 3 on Day 4
Yes - so I missed writing yesterday. I was up very early after a late night on Sunday. My friend Eddie has two kids and they get up in the morning around 6 or so - and that is what happened on Monday and today. I spent the rest of Monday groggy and wanting more sleep and was very lazy for the day - until the evening when I had to get ready to go out and play.
Last night's set at The Sail Inn was a pretty good one. I had a small crew of people make it out which I was happy about - especially for a Monday night. The people that run the Sail Inn are very cool and it's been a good place to play.
In a few minutes I'm going to be getting my stuff together and hitting the road again - back to LA and then later on playing at The Cinema Bar in Culver City for show #3 of the tour.
All right - time to get moving.

Cave Creek - Day 2
It's almost 7 pm over here - the sun has gone down and my sets out here in Cave Creek are done. The last time I was out here at Janey's for a New Year's Eve show with my friend Eddie Elliot, who's been a great friend and a fellow singer/songwriter/ traveler, it was 27 degrees and we were basically playing outside - today was much warmer - no overcoat needed. Cave Creek is a little town north of Phoenix - about 45 minutes or so. A lot of weekend warrior bikers come out here, and then there's a little artist community too - so it has a unique feel to it.
The drive out here to Arizona was easy and uneventful - which is a good thing - a little bit of traffic on the way out of town. I was happy to cross the Arizona border and see the gas prices drop to 3.55 and then later even lower.

I met up with Eddie at the place that he works at and where he plays a couple nights a week - Kitchen 56 which is at 56th St. and Indian School. The kitchen was still open and I ordered the burger which ended up being a double, double thing - way too much burger. So I took off the extra patty and left it - there was no way I was going to finish it all. Overall it was good - cooked well - medium - nice and pink inside. So if you're looking for a good double burger at a great price, kitchen 56 is your place.
Tomorrow I'll be over at the Sail Inn in Tempe and hopefully get to see my cousin Lisa at some point. Anyway - I think I'm done here.

Hitting the road...day 1
So the time has come - my car has been packed up - guitars and gear, clothes and coats - soon will be all gassed up (at around $3.80 a gallon here in Southern California) and ready to head to my first destination and my first show of this Spring Tour - Phoenix and Cave Creek on Sunday. I've been planning this trip for a several months now and I'm hoping it lives up to my expectations - which I'm sure it will in one way or the other.
